AFC Telford boss wants Andy Owens to stay

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today revealed he wants to keep striker Andy Owens at the New Bucks Head for next season's charge.

The Bucks front-man is out of contract this summer but will now be offered terms to stay in Shropshire, after improving under Watson's tutelage.

The 24-year-old cut a maligned figure in the just-gone season, as he waited until Bonfire Night at Brackley Town to score his first competitive goal.

His next strike didn't come until February but he did hit a purple patch from there, finishing the campaign as a first-choice forward with seven goals.

Watson said: "He wants to stay and I want to keep him. When you win a league, everyone contributes and he's been a good option to have this season.

"He's probably not scored as many goals as we thought he would, but I wouldn't worry about him playing in the higher league."

The Telford boss also believes supporters will see the best of Charlie Barnett, after the midfielder's so-so season since arriving with a big reputation.

The former Liverpool and England youth player was playing in non-league football for the first time, dropping down after leaving Accrington Stanley.

The 25-year-old signed a two-year contract days before the Skrill Conference North title-winning season was due to begin, so took time to get fully fit.

Watson said: "I think Charlie will benefit massively after he's had a proper pre-season, as he only signed for us just before the campaign the last time around."
