Rovers are eyeing another shot at cup glory
Waterloo Rovers booked their place in the semi-finals of the Emrys Morgan Cup following a 3-0 win over unbeaten Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League leaders Penparcau at Maesdyre.
The hosts made a strong start to this fifth round tie and saw Will Thomas's low 20-yard shot was turned behind for a corner in the second minute.
Penparcau responded when Luke Sherbon's shot on the turn fizzed narrowly wide on the far post before Jack Mleczeck's near post header from a corner thundered back off the post.
Thomas was unable to keep his 17th-minute close-range volley under the crossbar after the ball was played back into the Ceredigion club's penalty area.Henry Watkins then fired wide from a 30-yard free-kick.
The Ceredigion men replied less 60 seconds later when Mattie Davies's effort was blocked following a low cross delivered from out on the right flank.
Penparcau went even closer when Sherbon struck the crossbar with a fierce drive from the edge of the penalty area in the 26th minute, with Gytis Pivnickas placing his header over the crossbar from the rebound.
Sherbon fired wide from the edge of the penalty area before Callum Evans was picked out in space in the 35th minute, but could only direct his shot wide of the far post.
The Welshpool club eventually broke the deadlock two minutes later when Thomas's inswinging corner crept straight inside the near post of goalkeeper Stuart Bird.
The hosts had the last clear opportunity of the first-half in the final minute when James Watkins fired an effort over the crossbar from nearly 30 yards out as the MMP Central Wales League (North) club headed back to the changing rooms holding a slender advantage.
Waterloo made a strong start to the second-half as they looked to build upon their lead against their Aberystwyth-based opponents, who had not lost this season.
Tom Ellis broke into the Penparcau penalty area, but saw his effort on goal blocked.
The hosts went even closer to doubling their advantage less than 60 seconds later when Thomas's shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved by Bird, with Michael Jones to directing the rebound over the crossbar from just a few yards out.
Ellis went close with a 25-yard shot in the 54th minute before Thomas netted his second goal of the afternoon three minutes later to place his team in a commanding position.
The former Berriew, Caersws and Welshpool Town forward swept home the ball from close-range despite Bird appealing that he had been fouled by an opponent.
Mark Gornall went close for Penparcau on the hour mark with a free-kick just outside the penalty area that drifted narrowly wide of Jack Williams's far post.
The scoring was completed with 18 minutes remaining when substitute Adam Gough found the far corner of the net with a first-time finish after latching on to a through ball from Ellis.
The hosts went close to adding a fourth goal in the final minute when Gough was denied by Bird after being picked out from a cross on the right.
Rovers will be looking to go one step better than two seasons ago, when they were defeated by local rivals Montgomery Town in the final, and lift the prestigious trophy for the first time in their history.
