Traffic-calming hopes for Telford ‘race track’ route

Major traffic-calming measures could be brought in on a busy Telford road in a bid to cut down on speeding drivers, who are using it as a "race track".

Proposals are in the pipeline to install speed bumps along Wellington Road in Muxton.

Residents claim their safety is being put at risk along the road which currently has a 30mph speed limit.

Now highways chiefs are suggesting a raft of traffic-calming measures for about half a mile in a bid to cut speeding drivers.

The proposed measures include rubber speed cushions that will be bolted to the carriageway and new traffic signs.

Families in the area have been taking part in a public consultation exercise over the scheme, with many reporting concerns to officers.

Richard Green, a Wellington Road resident, said: "We definitely agree with the council that we need traffic calming measures.

"At times it resembles a race track on Wellington Road. It can be a very dangerous for other road users and pedestrians.

"The other issue is that there's the Shropshire Riding Stables, so it's also frequently used for horses. There's a number of aspects to why we need this."

Mr Green said that while he agreed that traffic measures were needed, he did not think speed bumps were the right solution.

"If you go to the other side of Wellington Road, near Aldi Donnington, they have traffic calming methods where you have to give way to oncoming traffic.

"A couple of solar operated signs showing the speed limit could be a better solution too," he added.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s spokesman Russell Griffin said: “Our highways team has carried out traffic surveys in the area of Wellington Road, in Muxton, which identified that average speeds on the road were significantly higher than the 30mph speed limit.

“As a result, we are now carrying out a consultation on a proposal to install traffic calming measures on the road, in a bid to reduce the average speeds to make the road safer for residents.

“We will take on board all the feedback that we get both in favour and against these proposals and publish our final decision after the consultation ends.”
