New flats plan submitted for Shrewsbury greenfield site

Plans have been resubmitted by a house builder looking for permission to build blocks of flats on land on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Saxonby Homes wants to build three blocks of flats on a greenfield site on Ellesmere Road.

The firm had originally applied to build the flats earlier this year but Shropshire Council refused them permission stating that the development was out of scale with the surrounding properties and that it would be incompatible with the principles of sustainable development.

The council also said that the site constitutes one of the remaining vestiges of open countryside within the immediate area.

In their decision, council planners said: "The development of this green field site for 38 dwellings would erode the character of the area by removal of the existing frontage hedgerow and by introducing development of a predominantly urban form into the open countryside which would appear incongruous and intrusive to the detriment of the rural setting of the locality."

But now the building firm has resubmitted its plans to build 36 dwellings with a variety of accommodation in design.

If the plans get the approval, there will be six one-bed apartments, 25 two-bed apartments of differing sizes and five three-bed apartments.

A design and access statement by aipArchitects on behalf of Saxonby Homes said: "Whilst some of the apartments have been standardised and are designed to meet current recommendations for older people, they are all designed to be contemporary and welcoming so that they will appeal to any generation for many years to come."

They go on to say that there will be plenty of natural light and daylight into the 'circulation spaces' which will promote social interaction. There will also be storage and outside amenity space for all the apartments.

Apartments will be grouped together into three simple blocks with shared communal open space.

aipArchitects added: "The proposals reflect the character of the local environment and will be sympathetic and in context, enhancing the frontage along Ellesmere Road.2

The matter will be discussed by the council's central planning committee in the New Year.
