The UK Government has began preparations to participate in the European elections in five weeks time.

Mr Davies has said he is supporting the Tory party in the elections, but believes the only way to stop wasting public money on the elections is to leave as soon as possible.

He said: "It is absolutely crucial that the UK agrees terms on which to leave the European Union before May 23, to avoid taking part in the elections to the European Parliament - three years after we decided to leave.

"The only way to avoid such a horrifying waste of public money is for MPs to decide on the terms on which the UK will leave by then, and preferably sooner.

Option

"Personally, I have supported the Withdrawal Agreement since the 28 EU members, including the UK Prime Minister, agreed it last year. Whilst not perfect, I still consider it to be the best available option.

“The most disappointing aspect of the debate amongst my colleagues is that some have made public announcements about not supporting our party in the European elections, assuming that they actually happen.

"I am a member of the Conservative Party and will not desert ‘my team’ at what is a difficult and challenging time for all of us.

"It’s not the time for fair weather friends. It’s never been truer that ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’.

"While the very idea of holding a European Election fills me with horror, I still believe the Conservative Party is far and away the best option for our country.”
