Telford & Wrekin Council has issued the reminder ahead of next month’s General Election, banning political groups and candidates from using its land or equipment to put up posters supporting their campaigns in the borough.

Many other councils do not allow political election material on their land.

The issue came to the fore during 2014’s summer European elections, when a number of election posters on street furniture were damaged or defaced, often with offensive symbols or language.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s returning officer, Richard Partington said people would be charged for flouting the rules.

He said: “I would remind campaign groups for the General Election that the ban on the posting of campaign literature on council-owned land and equipment applies for this poll, as much as any other.

“Any group posting material on council land or property will be charged for its removal.”

Anyone who sees election material placed on council land or property, can e-mail elections@telford.gov.uk with details of the location, or call 01952 383206.
