We've got ice cream van riddle licked

This specially designed Sidoli's ice cream van is cone, but not forgotten – and thanks to Tony Bromley we have what may be a last sighting.

He spotted it in an old quarry. But don't get too excited, as we're going back over 50 years.

We featured the photo of the ice cream van, which was once a familiar sight around Shrewsbury, in Pictures From The Past.

It was taken in 1935 at Harlescott and that distinctive bodywork was made by Vincent Greenhous.

Tony rang in to say: "I saw this ice cream van at the back of Harmer Hill quarry in the early 1960s.

"I worked for John Griffiths of Myddle and me and this other bloke, Brian Austin, who lived at Clive, had to go there as he had a contract to dismantle Vaggs' buses old garage there.

"The garage was called Hillcrest, and used to sell petrol as well. It was just an empty shell really, and when we were contracted to go and dismantle it, that's when I noticed the Sidoli's ice cream van round the back of the garage.

"It was in quite good condition. You could still see the colours on it."

Tony, who lived at the time in Wem but now lives in Ellesmere, cannot recall if they took the opportunity to take a closer look.

"I never heard anything else about it. I don't know if it was taken away, or if anybody had it," he added.

He said houses had since been built at the front of the old quarry.
