The 11th edition of the Tour des Marches, formerly known as the Wistanstow Challenge Walk, is due to take place on September 9, with 12, 18 and 26 mile options around the south Shropshire area, setting out from the village near Craven Arms.

The event is organised by the Marches Group of the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Member Phil Clarke said: "Starting from Wistanstow Village Hall, one of the finest in the country, the route makes its way west to Clun, before heading north to Bishop’s Castle and then east on the homeward journey back to Wistanstow.

"Entrants will experience the rich mixture of hills, river valleys and woodland that make up the stunning scenery. For much of the day walkers and runners will be in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, established in 1958.

"As well as using paths that are well known, including parts of The Shropshire Way, entrants will be introduced to more secretive parts of the rights of way network.

"The event is advertised nationally and entries are already coming in, once again a full entry of 150 people is expected. So if you are local and fancy a challenge please get your entry in early.

"Each year the event raises funds for a local good cause, previous recipients have been the primary school and the under 5s Group, last year £650 was presented to the village hall committee to help with running costs. A donation is also given to The Firefighters Charity."

Entry is £10 for LDWA Members, £15 for all others, and includes a detailed route description including a colour outline map of the route, breakfast, food and drink at checkpoints, plus a meal at the finish.

There are toilets at Wistanstow Village Hall and at the two food checkpoints of Clun and Bishop’s Castle.

Those who decide to do the 12 or 18 mile options will be transported back to the finish and everyone will receive a certificate for the distance achieved. Completions by men under 6 hours 30 minutes and by ladies under 7 hours 30minutes, will result in a gold certificate. Runners are welcome to take part.

Online entry is available at www.sientries.co.uk, with entry forms also at www.wistanstowwalk.blogspot.com.

Alternatively paper entry forms are available from The Spar Shop, Route 49 Fish and Chips, The Discovery Centre, The Plough Inn Wistanstow, the Outdoor Depot Church Stretton and The Smithy Shop Wistanstow.
