Glorious scene amid Shropshire's big chill

It is as pretty as an oil painting – but you wouldn't want to stay out in it for long.

This glistening frosty panorama was captured by Shropshire Star photographer Jamie Ricketts in High Ercall.

Temperatures across the county dropped as low as -4C (25F) overnight, with some rural areas falling even lower.

The south half of the country, including Shropshire, has been under a blanket of still cold conditions, while the north has been milder but windy.

That warmer air was today expecting to move across Shropshire, ending the cold snap and bringing the prospect of more unsettled weather into the weekend. Gritters were out across Shropshire last night, and both Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council are well stocked up for the winter.

Local Government Association transport spokesman Martin Tett said: "We are well prepared for the cold nationally, with 1.2 million tonnes of salt stockpiled and a fleet of state-of-the-art gritters ready to be deployed."

Public Health England has also warned people to remember that "cold does kill" even in places that are not experiencing the coldest temperatures.

Thursday will mark the beginning of meteorological winter, which lasts until February 1.
