Harper Adams plans new teaching block
A new 'landmark' teaching block could be built at Harper Adams University College near Newport as part of major expansion plans, it has been revealed.
The new building will replace the old dairy unit at the college in Edgmond and will be powered and heated by renewable energy as part of a drive by staff to do their bit to protect the environment.
Facilities will include a new lecture theatre, four seminar rooms, two IT rooms and drop-in facilities and there will also be a new car park with 34 spaces.
Plans have been submitted by college chiefs to Telford & Wrekin Council and is the latest move to expand the campus, which has seen £21 million spent on new facilities in the past three years.
A separate application has also been submitted to create a new access point to serve the campus.
Paul Moran, estates manager at Harper Adams University College, said: "The proposed teaching block will provide quality student facilities to complement our award-winning estate and maintain our high levels of student satisfaction.
"We plan to develop a redundant part of the estate, the former dairy unit, into a landmark building which will be powered and heated by renewables as part of our on-going commitment to sustainable development."
Harper Adams has a reputation for providing top class agricultural-based courses.
The move is the latest in the university's ambitious expansion project, and staff say facilities have been increased by 40 per cent over the past three years.
The university's biggest project has been the £3 million anaerobic digester, which opened in 2011 and creates energy from waste products.
