Police were astonished to discover that a silent 999 call from an address near Ironbridge was made by a dog.

A 999 operator received the call on Sunday from address in Jackfield.

A police spokesman said: "The operator tried to speak to the caller but there was no response to her questions.

"No disturbance or any suspicious noises were heard and the phone was then hung up.

"The 999 operator called back immediately and spoke to a woman who was very apologetic, her dog had managed to knock the telephone off the hook and then had somehow dialled 999.

"The operator made sure that all was in order and then ended the call."
