The men approached the 33-year-old woman from behind while she was walking through the graveyard of Old St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury and pushed her over. They emptied her handbag and stole money and a pair of gold earrings before running off towards the town centre.

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to the attack, which happened between 11pm and 11.30pm on Thursday.

Officers have also urged people to keep to busy well-lit roads and to avoid taking shortcuts through parks and dark alleyways.

All of the men are described as white and aged between 20 and 25. The first man is thought to be of a skinny build with dark shaved hair and wearing a yellow waist length jacket and dark jeans. He has a distinctive scar on the side of his face, from his temple to his cheek bone.

The second man is described as having a "chubby build" and wearing dark clothing with a red baseball cap. The third man was of medium build.

Detective Constable Samantha Salt of West Mercia Police said: "It is believed there will have been plenty of people in the town centre at the time who may have witnessed something. I'm asking for anyone who saw men of these descriptions to please come forward."

Information can be passed on to police by calling 101 or Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
