Kington pupils invited to town council meeting to talk about youth issues and learn about councils
Students from a Kington school will be invited to attend a Kington Town Council meeting to pass on youth issues and to learn about local councils
Kington Mayor Councillor Philip Sell has been keen to see Lady Hawkins School pupils come to a meeting and he said he has spoken to the head teacher about the school council.
Headteacher Allen Brace is also eager for the youngsters to attend a meeting but he said the school council is just about to re-form and maybe they could attend a town council meeting in July before the end of term.
Councillor Sell said it would be a chance for the students to share their concerns and issues and experience a town council meeting.
Town clerk Liz Kelso said she thought some work may need to be done with the students before they attend a meeting to ensure they are made aware that members of the public may attend too, and to make sure they understand that the council would not be able to make any decisions on any matters that are not placed on the agenda beforehand.
Other councillors said the students should also be made aware of council protocol.
Members agreed in principle to inviting the students to a meeting but they think it would be best to defer it until the autumn to give the school council a chance to settle in and to allow time to explain to them how a town council meeting works.
