Ms Wood spoke to members at The Royal Oak Hotel in Welshpool, alongside local county councillor Elwyn Vaughan.

The pair answered questions on a variety of topics, including how to challenge the Labour government in Cardiff to invest more money in Mid Wales. Councillor Vaughan was pleased with the meeting and how the supporters interacted with the leader.

He also insisted Mid and West Wales AM Simon Thomas would be coming to meet local party members later this year.

He said: “There were lots of questions about Wales post Brexit, agriculture, rural economy and how mid Wales can benefit from new investment and challenge the Labour Government in Wales for the benefit of democracy.

“I said, this is an ongoing conversation we are having with communities in order to develop a sense of ownership over policy development and listen to people who have good ideas. The next step will be an open meeting with Simon Thomas AM in Berriew.

“It’s time for change and we need to promote a positive vision for Mid Wales as an integral part of Wales. Powys is the heart of Wales and we need to ensure its heart keeps beating.”

Prior to her visit on Thursday, the leader insisted there were massive tasks facing Wales following Brexit, and the risk she believes a UK Conservative Government poses to Welsh jobs and services.

She believes decisions that will effect Mid Wales and the country as a whole, should be made in Wales.

She said: “I want people throughout Wales to consider how we can lift up our country by taking responsibility for our own affairs and our own lives, and on how we can start a debate in Wales about ending our dependence on others. Decisions about Wales should be made in Wales.”

Ms Wood was the second party leader in a week to arrive in Welshpool, after Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable paid a visit.
