Job fears over Powys early years places review
The future of education for three-year-olds in Powys is to undergo a root and branch review.
The county council is undertaking a look at the way early years education is provided across Mid Wales.
It says the current situation is unsustainable because there are surplus places for three year olds in Powys.
Now the county council is planning a series of events for providers and families to go along and have their say on children's education and early years provision.
Teaching unions have warned that any review could lead to job losses if cuts are made
All three-year-old children in the county are entitled to 10 hours a week of free early years education.
Powys County Council funds a variety of projects to deliver education for early years children.
But the council says there are a number of challenges, such as increased staffing costs and surplus places, which makes the current situation unsustainable.
"Parents, carers and providers are invited to help look at ways to improve how things are done," cabinet member for education, Councillor Arwel Jones said.
"The council is looking to create a sustainable and equitable service across the county, ensuring that families receive a quality service regardless of where they live.
"Families who have an interest in early years provision in Powys are encouraged to attend one of the meetings.
"There are focus groups which need to be booked and also a drop-in session where anyone can come along and find out more.
"It's important that we hear from providers and parents or carers and that they help us shape future delivery of early years education across the county.
"This review will focus on funded early years education provision, Flying Start Childcare providers and settings used for the Powys Referral Scheme as well as Children's Services placements."
Meetings will include an event at Newtown Integrated Family Centre in Newtown on June 3, which will include a parent focus group from 10am until noon, a provider focus group from 1pm to 3pm and a public drop-in session from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
Parents or carers and providers will need to book to attend a focus group session, but places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come basis.
To book a place on one of the sessions call (01597) 826112 or email children.youngpeople@powys.gov.uk
For those unable to attend the sessions there will be an online questionnaire available in June at www.powys.gov.uk/haveyoursay
There will be another chance for families and providers to be involved again with a formal consultation in the autumn.
