Lloyd Burton was greeted with a standing ovation when he arrived at The Red Barn in Shrewsbury with Shrewsbury Town Football manager Micky Mellon.

The sell-out evening is expected to have raised thousands for Lloyd who uses a wheelchair after undergoing gruelling treatment for a brain tumour.

Lloyd and his family and friends gathered at the pub on Longden Road to enjoy live music, a raffle, auction and fun and games on Thursday night.

Staff and well wishers had pulled out all the stops to make it a top night for the Meole Brace Primary School pupil.

Lloyd's father David said: "Words can't express what a wonderful night it was. Micky Mellon and Shrewsbury Town staff came and walked Lloyd down to the pub and when Micky took him inside everyone gave him a standing ovation. Lloyd said it was the best night he's had since he's been ill."

Landlady Teresa Roberts-Williams who organised the fundraiser hopes to have reached the £6,000 mark.

She said: "It was fantastic. We have so many people to thank. Lloyd had a fantastic time and the support from everyone was just amazing.

"It makes you realise how much love there is for this one special person. I couldn't be prouder of the pub or our customers.

"We had a live band called The Ending who gave up their time and talent free of charge. They were brilliant and really got the party started.

"We did a raffle with donations from local shops and friends of Lloyd then there was an auction where people had donated bigger prizes.

"We had laid on food and it was just wonderful.

"There are so many people who helped on so many different ways to make it the successful night it was.

"Every penny will go towards a mobility chair for Lloyd. He needs his own wheelchair too as he is in a hired one.

"It's about making the time that he has got more comfortable for him and making memories for his family. His sisters were here and we gave them flowers and a gift voucher from us so they know they are very much in our thoughts.

"We completely sold out of tickets and there were loads more people who wanted to come. So for those who missed out we are holding a Christmas fair on Sunday, December 7 from 4pm. There will be stalls and we are hoping to get Father Christmas here."
