Developers had planned to bulldoze Besford House in Belle Vue, Shrewsbury and build dozens of new homes in the grounds.

But, following complaints by local residents, the plans were thrown out by Shropshire Council. Amended plans for the retention and renovation of the mansion and the building of six town houses, one detached house and three semi-detached houses were approved.

Once renovated the mansion, which was built in 1893 and became a boys' home in 1911 as a way of getting children out of the workhouses, will become two villas.

Saxonby Homes has been undertaking the building work. Director James Wood said he was excited about the company's first major project in Shrewsbury.

He said: "We are excited to announce the launch of Besford Gardens and are confident that our passion and attention to detail will result in a first-class development.

"Due to strong demand we have already reserved three properties prior to the launch and would recommend potential buyers make contact with the sales agent sooner rather than later."

Floreat Homes is a trading name of Shropshire Housing Group and was formed to create high-quality open market homes.

Besford Gardens is Floreat Homes' first development in conjunction with Saxonby Homes, with a further site nearing completion at Neenton and another development due to start in Newport.

John Brown, from Floreat Homes, said: "We are really proud of this development as it is Floreat Homes' first.

"It demonstrates the quality we are aiming for in all our future developments."

He added: "The location of Besford Gardens, within Belle Vue's conservation area, yet within walking distance of Shrewsbury town centre, will appeal to buyers looking for quality homes in a convenient location."

Town centre estate agency Miller Evans has been appointed as the selling agent.
