Seven sheep die after lorry overturns near Ludlow

Seven sheep died and a lorry jackknifed today on an icy county road.

A farm vehicle hit problems on the A49 between the Onibury and Stokesay junctions. It turned on its side along with the trailer full of 34 sheep.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "There were seven sheep fatalities."

The driver was not injured in the accident, which happened at about 6.30am.

Meanwhile, also on the A49, a lorry jackknifed causing delays in both directions. The accident happened at about 5am in Church Stretton between the B4371 Sandford Avenue and B4368 Corvedale Road.

Inspector Smith said: "There were no injuries but there was some diesel spilt on the road. The road was blocked and we put a diversion in place.

The road re-opened shortly after 2pm.
