Telford drivers face more road closure delays

Motorists in Telford are facing further road closures as part of the scheme to create a new two-way system around the town centre.

The Malinslee roundabout is to close during weekday evenings for up to two weeks from Monday as part of the £12 million Box Road two-way project.

The closures come on top of disruption for drivers caused by bridge strengthening work on the M54 and a further Highways Agency project to improve Forge Roundabout at junction five of the motorway in the town centre.

Telford & Wrekin Council is creating a two-way scheme to make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to move between the shopping centre and the £250 million Southwater leisure and entertainment development.

The scheme will also help manage traffic into the new Asda store in Malinsgate, which is due to open next month.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for transport, said: "We would like to apologise again for any inconvenience and disruption that has been caused by the ongoing work.

"However, making the Box Road two way will have significant long term benefits for the town, including creating a more traditional town centre feel with a greater choice of routes to all parts of the town centre, and slowing traffic down, making it safer for all road users."

A diversion will be in place for the small number of bus services affected by the overnight closures.

The latest phase of work will see Malinslee roundabout closed between 7pm and 6am, from Monday until January 17 and from January 20 until January 22.

Access to businesses on Southwater Way will be maintained.
