Urgent repairs costing £76,000 will need to take place at a historic Ludlow church before a £4 million bid is made next year to restore the building.

The £76,000 will be used to repair stained glass and monuments at St Laurence's Church.

The money has been stumped up by the St Laurence's Conservation Trust which says the work needs to be completed before more ambitious plans are acted upon.

The trust needs a £4.3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete the restoration.

Work due to start next year includes renovation of the roof and masonry. Roofs in both the St John and Lady Chapels will need to be completely replaced. The £76,000 will be used immediately.

Ludlow mayor John Aitken and trustee said: "The trust will continue to focus on restoring this wonderful building."
