Newport Carnival was today under threat as just three people were left to organise this year's event, which took place on Saturday and was a success.

Today outgoing treasurer Lorraine Pilgrim appealed for people to step forward to help run the event and secure its future.

Mrs Pilgrim said in the past the committee had 10 members but that dwindled to just three this year.

"It would be such a shame to see it go but we are not continuing with it anymore," said Mrs Pilgrim.

"I took it on some years ago because I wanted to make sure it was kept running for my children. Now they are growing up and I think it's time other people had a go.

"There is no doubt it is hard work but it is immensely satisfying and without people coming forward it will mean the end of Newport Carnival.

"We don't want to see that happen but there are only three of us on the committee and we all have full-time jobs so it's too much.

Mrs Pilgrim added the carnival needs a revamp.

"It needs some fresh blood too," she added. "We have tried our very best every year to change things around but it's always good to have new faces with new ideas.

"I just hope people come forward because it is one of the best events in the town and I would be so sad to see it go - but we can't carry on."

Mrs Pilgrim said the old committee will do everything it can for a smooth handover.

"Although we are leaving, we want it to continue to be a success," she added. "If people express an interest we will help them to start it.

"We have not decided on a full plan as yet because we were so busy with the carnival but people wont be left on their own to do it."
