A Shropshire drama group is preparing to take audiences on a journey back in time to ancient Rome.

Mad Cow Productions, based in Shrewsbury, is to stage Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum this April.

The bawdy farce has won of numerous Tony Awards, including best musical and best book. The play has seen several Broadway and West End revivals, the most recent at The National Theatre in 2004. The show will be the first the company performs at Theatre Severn where it will be staged in the Walker Theatre.

Director Alex Hinton said they were looking forward to performing at Theatre Severn and ticket sales were going well. She said: "The theatre seats 246 and we have already sold 232 for the Saturday night show.

"We're really excited to be at Theatre Severn as it is such a great venue.

"As usual we hope to showcase the very best of Shropshire talent in this wonderful, colourful, fast moving and very funny show." Later in the year Mad Cow Productions will stage another Sondheim show Side By Side. Both shows coincide with his 80th birthday year.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum will run from April 14 to 17. Tickets are £12. To book call (01743) 281281.
