Young Shropshire volunteer gains confidence and experience through new programme
Volunteering at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre has helped Leigh gain workplace skills, build confidence and take positive steps towards employment
A young man who struggled to find work because he lacked experience has spoken about how volunteering has helped him develop new skills, build confidence and feel more positive about his future.

Leigh joined the Employability and Enterprise Programme after being referred by his Jobcentre work coach, hoping to gain practical experience and improve his chances of finding employment.
Like many young people entering the jobs market, he found it difficult to secure opportunities without having previous experience or qualifications.
He said: "I didn't really have anything to do. I didn't have any experience. I didn't really have any qualifications on top of that as well."
With support from Fran, from the programme's Employability and Enterprise team, Leigh explored opportunities suited to his interests and ambitions.
Together, they identified a volunteering placement at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, where he could gain experience in a real working environment.
Leigh said: "She helped me look at stuff that I'd actually be interested in, instead of just throwing me in the direction of everything that came along."
At the centre, Leigh has taken on a varied role, spending much of his time on reception and the till, helping visitors, answering telephone enquiries and providing information about the centre, its exhibitions and grounds.
The placement has helped him develop customer service, communication and problem-solving skills, as well as gain confidence working as part of a team.
He said: "A lot of places now see having experience as sometimes more crucial than actual qualifications."
Although initially hesitant about volunteering, Leigh said taking the opportunity had made a significant difference to him.
He said: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained, if you don't try."
He particularly enjoys working alongside the centre's staff, describing them as friendly and welcoming.

What began as a six-week placement has continued, with the centre keen for Leigh to remain part of the team.
A member of staff said: "We're really pleased with Leigh. The original placement was for six weeks, but we're very happy for him to continue volunteering with us."
Leigh said he hoped to continue volunteering for as long as possible, adding that he now felt positive about what lay ahead.
He also encouraged other young people who might be considering the programme to take the opportunity.
"I personally would say try it and give it a go, give it your best go," he said.
Leigh, who said he had initially been hesitant about taking on work or volunteering because of mental health difficulties, added: "I suffer with mental health issues myself and I was very hesitant about doing any sort of job, let alone volunteering, and it has helped me a tremendous amount."
The Employability and Enterprise Programme supports young people aged 18 to 30 across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin to build confidence, develop skills and access opportunities through volunteering, wellbeing support, mentoring and enterprise activities.
