Teenagers soaked up the sunshine as they marched around a town park raising awareness of a national charity.

Young people taking part in the National Citizen Service with Shrewsbury Town in the Community filled the town's Quarry park for a 10km march. The event was held on Tuesday to promote the charity Help For Heroes and saw them dress in combat gear and walk around the park.

Haylie Norton, NCS co-ordinator, said: "There was a team of 15 NCS children and as part of their programme they had to develop and carry out a social action project to give back to the community.

"These young people chose to do a march around the Quarry dressed in their combat gear and raise awareness of Help For Heroes. They are all aged 15 to 17 and a lot of the time they choose their charity by sharing stories and finding one that is close to them."

The group was also joined by Derek Harvey, who was a Sargent Major in the Royal Marines for 26 years. He served in the Falklands war, in Ireland and all other commanding units.

The teens, who take part in the summer programme voluntarily, will also have to organise an event to raise money for another charity. This group has chosen to support Hope House with a Zumbathon event.

Ms Norton said: "It was difficult for them especially in the weather but it went really well. It was a great success. There were lots of people asking questions about the charity and why they were doing it, so it was good to be able to promote NCS as well."
