Watch: Award-winning Bridgnorth butchers explain the secret to their success

Alderson's Butchers & Pie House swept the prestigious 2026 Dalziel "Battle of the Butchers" and Golden Cleaver Awards

A Bridgnorth butcher shop has been celebrating a haul of awards.

Alderson's Butchers & Pie House swept the prestigious 2026 Dalziel "Battle of the Butchers" and Golden Cleaver Awards with an impressive six-star haul.

They secured three 3-star awards, two 2-star awards, and a 1-star award for their premium handmade meats and pies, with judges going potty in particular for the shop’s “Potter's Garlic Chicken Lattice”, which is cooked up by butcher Peter “Potter” Hilton.

Manager, Julia Spencer, who runs the shop with husband Charlie said they are all very “proud” of their success.

“We're so, so proud, particularly because we've just had our third baby,” she said. “So the staff have been working flat out so all the credit goes to them actually, especially Peter, because he got the three stars for his product. So we're really, really happy with the team.

“I think as far as 2026 goes, we're done for the competitions as we've got the summer now and plan to do loads of summer specials including lots of barbecue stuff and lots of kebabs.”

Butcher Peter, whose Garlic Chicken Lattice wowed the judges at the awards, said the secret to its success was in using local produce.

“Everything is local,” he said. “We only believe in using local resources from local farmers and that go into a local business. And in Shropshire, we have some of the best produce that you can get in the country.”

He added he was very proud that his creation scooped three stars.

“It's a bit of a pat on the back really. When you actually enter these things, you get a bit worried that no one's going to like it.

“But when you get top marks for it, it always does take me by surprise. I'm actually very proud of this and all the other certificates and products that we've entered.”
