There were a number of surprises on the penultimate day of the Bowyer Styles Junior County Closed Tournament at the Welti Centre.

The most notable was caused by 14-year-old Matthew Taylor, seeded four in the boys' 16U who took on the top seed David McKenzie-James in the first of the event's semi finals.

In a fiercely contested three set match, Matthew squeezed out an outstanding win to set up a final encounter today with Criftins' Amar Singh, the third seed, who had a fine win over Market Drayton's James Joule (2) 6-4,6-3.

In the boys' 14U semis, Arjun Singh, seeded 3, had a two set win over top seed Christian Cieslik in a highly competitive and hard fought match. Second seed Greg Bradburn made his way safely through to meet Arjun in the final.

The boys' 12U semi finals saw Edward Gibbs (Welti) gain a tremendous victory over second seed Paddy Townsend and get himself a final against the event favourite, Kyle Fellows, who ended the excellent run of Charles Richards with a 6-1,6-0 win.

Welti's Ellie Hill reached her second final of the week with another semi final victory over Melissa Martin (Albrighton), this time in the girls'18U. Playing well above her age group, 13 year old Melissa, an experienced player in her own right, was never quite able to match the power and consistency of her older opponent.

Ellie was due to play Tipton's Emma Windsor in both the 16U and 18U finals today.

Olivia Jones, 11, from Boughey Gardens did cause one upset in the girls events, beating the higher rated Harriet Rogers, to reach the final of the girls' 12U where she will play top seed Sarah Willacy.

A number of doubles finals were decided yesterday. In the 14U mixed, a meeting of the top two pairs, Stephanie Potts & Arjun Singh and Sarah Willacy and Kyle Fellows saw victory for the second and younger pair Sarah & Kyle. In a repeat of last year's girls' 14U doubles, Joanne Bowen & Lauren McMinn retained their title by beating Stephanie Potts & Tania Harrison 6-1,6-2.
