Leaders keep gap at top as Llandod struggles continue

Llanuwchllyn continue to keep the chasing pack at bay in the Ardal North East League - as they picked up their 14th win of the campaign at home to Rhos Aelwyd.

The victory sees them remain five points in front of second placed Knighton Town with 12 games left of the campaign.

It was pretty routine stuff for the Denbighshire side - as they netted either side of the break.

Dafydd Griffith opened the scoring seven minutes before half time with experienced striker Meilor Williams making it two just after the restart.

Knighton kept up the heat on the leaders though as they navigated what could have been a potentially tricky game as they travelled to basement side Lex XI.

They were left stunned after 13 minutes as George Baxter put the home side in front, a goal that sparked a manic few minute.

Within seconds Knighton skipper and top scorer Luke Boundford had levelled things up before Lex were then reduced to ten men.

Before the break it was Knighton who were in front Kieran Dovey set up Connor Bird ten minutes before half time.

It remained that way with Lex still in the game, until 12 minutes from time when Boundford turned provider for Dovey to net the third.

The result means Knighton remain five points behind the leaders but they do have a game in hand, 

Llanrhaeadr suffered a shock as they were beaten 2-1 at home to strugglers Llangollen Town.

William Cooke had the visitors in front at the break, before Cooke made it two just after the hour mark.

Garmon Evans netted a consolation from the spot in second half stoppage time - but it was Llan who held on the for the win, a result which was just their second victory of the season.

Corwen and Builth Wells shared the spoils as they drew 1-1 in North Wales.

James Rainbird put the home side in front before the former Newtown man then missed the chance to make it two - as he was denied from the penalty spot.

The equaliser came early in the second period as Builth captain Ryan Powel fired home to rescue a point for his side.

Penycae were beaten 3-1 at home to Cefn Albion - as Alex Williams lashed in a hat-trick for the visitors.

And Llandrindod Wells' dreadful run of form continued - as they were beaten 1-0 at home against Bow Street.

The Spamen's last league win came back in October - and they have only picked up two points from a possible 21 in their last seven league outings.

One of those points came against leaders Llanuwchllyn and they were smashed 5-1 by local rivals Builth Wells on Boxing Day.

Their latest defeat was their third on the bounce and came courtesy of a single goal from Callum Page midway through the first half.

They will be hoping for better fortunes this weekend as they make the trip to Ceredigion to face Dolgellau.

Elsewhere, Bow Street host Llanfair United who were without a game last week - while Builth welcome strugglers Llangollen Town to Lant Field.

Llanrhaeadr face a tricky assignment as they look to bounce back when they make the trip north to Cefn Albion.

Kerry host the leaders Llanuwchllyn looking to spark some form, while Knighton host Corwen and Radnor Valley head to Lex XI.
