Wolves ace Roderick Miranda in match-fixing allegations

Wolves defender Roderick Miranda has been named as part of a police investigation into match-fixing in Portugal.

The 26-year-old – who signed from Rio Ave in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5 million – is one of four suspected of wrong-doing following last season’s Portuguese Primeira League game between Rio Ave and Feirense.

He is accused along with fellow defenders Marcelo and Nadjack, along with goalkeeper Cassio.

Betting on the fixture, which took place in February, was suspended prior to kick-off after an unusually high bet of £100,000 – which reports have claimed came from China – was placed on a Feirense win.

An investigation was then launched immediately following the match, which Feirense won 2-1.

Championship leaders Wolves face second-placed Bristol City this evening looking to extend their advantage over the Robins to eight points.

Miranda, who has made 16 appearances this season, remains available for selection at Wolves and was today given the public backing of head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

In a statement, Rio Ave expressed their displeasure at details of the investigation being leaked prior to its conclusion, warning it could be potentially damaging.

Rio Ave also made clear their ‘full confidence’ in the players who, Miranda excepting, all remain with the club.

Any player found guilty of match-fixing faces a likely lifetime ban from the game, while in Portugal the charge carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
