‘Something we haven’t got’ - Boss on Shrewsbury Town new boy Michael Golding

Gavin Cowan reveals what Michael Golding can add to Shrewsbury Town.

Gavin Cowan hopes new recruit Michael Golding can bring flair and excitement to Shrewsbury Town as the youngster looks to “reignite his career”.

Golding became Salop’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window after joining on a season-long loan from Leicester City.

It is the first loan move of the young midfielder’s career, with Golding having made just one senior appearance for the Foxes since joining from Chelsea in 2024 - and Town boss Cowan hopes Salop can be the perfect platform for him.

“We’re really excited to be welcoming Michael with us,” he said. “We’re really appreciative to Leicester of how they can accommodate the move.

“He’s been on the radar for a while. He’s a young guy that needs to reignite his career.

“He sees this as a perfect platform, so he’ll be a really good addition. Young, obviously unproven, but one that we think has got great pedigree and certainly got the attributes that we haven’t got in the group at the moment.

“A little bit of flair, someone who can unlock doors, someone who can get into the half spaces. So, yes, I am really pleased to have him on board.”

Cowan added that Golding could play in central midfield or as an advanced number 10 role behind the strikers, or even operate out wide if required.

“There’s a lot of versatility with his skillset,” Cowan said.

Golding further bolsters Town’s midfield options, with Cowan believing the 20-year-old can offer something different to his existing players.

“He’s a backfoot, dribbling driver,” Cowan added. “He wants to play in the little pockets, he wants to attack, he wants to drive at defenders.

“He’s athletic, quick, I am really excited to have him here.”

With his medical completed on Friday morning and the relevant documents signed, Golding joined Shrewsbury in time to potentially feature in their League Two clash with Salford City this weekend - although Cowan stressed a decision would be made after assessing him in training.

He said: “Yes, perhaps. We’re going to be assessing him today (Friday).

“He’s done a medical this morning and we’ll be assessing him in training just to see where he’s at.

“He did have 45 minutes on Thursday. So we just need to make sure that after assessment he’ll be up and ready. But I’m very much hoping so.”
