Get to know the £4m midfielder who has joined Shrewsbury Town
Who is Michael Golding? The midfielder who has joined Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.
Michael Golding has become Shrewsbury Town’s ninth signing of the summer transfer window - here’s everything you need to know about the midfielder.
Career beginnings
Golding began his career in AFC Wimbledon’s academy before joining Chelsea in 2018.
He rose through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and signed his first professional contract with the Blues in July 2023, while also training with the first team during the 2023/24 campaign.
Chelsea debut
Golding made his Chelsea debut in January 2024, coming on against Preston North End in the FA Cup third round.
The midfielder was introduced in the 89th minute for Enzo Fernandez as Chelsea cruised to a 4-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
£4m move to Leicester
Golding’s time in west London came to an end that summer when Leicester City swooped to sign him in a deal worth around £4million.
He left Chelsea after making 21 appearances for their Under-21s during the 2023/24 season and was also part of the side that won the southern section of the Under-18 Premier League.
The midfielder signed a four-year contract with the Foxes.
Leicester
Since his move to Leicester, who were relegated to League One last season, Golding has made one senior appearance for the club.

That came last May when he was introduced as a late substitute during Leicester’s Premier League victory over Southampton.
International experience
Golding is eligible to represent both England and the Republic of Ireland through his family.
In September 2021, he made two appearances for the Republic of Ireland Under-16s, both in friendly matches against Malta, scoring in a 6-0 victory.
He later represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 level.
Golding captained England at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in summer 2023 and later that year played three times at the Under-17 World Cup.
Footballing family
The 20-year-old is the brother of fellow professional footballer James Golding and scholar Aidan Golding.
James plays for Oxford United and has had several loan spells across non-league and the EFL, including in League Two last season, while Aidan is a Brentford youngster.
Shrewsbury move
Golding has completed a loan move to Shrewsbury, giving Gavin Cowan another option in midfield.
Town have been working hard behind the scenes to strengthen their squad before the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday night, with Golding set to become their ninth addition.
