Shrewsbury Town set to sign young Aston Villa defender

Salop are eying Aston Villa defender Lino Sousa as the transfer deadline approaches.

Shrewsbury Town are set to sign Aston Villa defender Lino Sousa.

The Shropshire Star understands a loan deal has been agreed as Town work to complete further signings before the transfer window closes.

The 21-year-old will become Salop’s 11th signing of the summer, following the arrival of Kian McMahon-Brown on loan from Burnley earlier today.

Sousa already has Championship and League One experience. The Lisbon-born full-back moved to England at an early age and joined West Brom’s academy before moving to Arsenal in 2022.

He joined Aston Villa in 2024 and has since enjoyed loan spells with Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers and Rotherham United.

It is understood Town have been working on a loan deal for Sousa ahead of Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

He will join goalkeeper Sam Proctor as the second Aston Villa player to arrive at Salop on loan this summer.
