Aston Villa in new goalkeeper talks with Emi Martinez's future in doubt

The club’s No.1 could depart after six years.

Villa are in talks to sign goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma with Emi Martinez’s future once again in doubt.

The Argentina international is the subject of a new bid from Juventus and discussions over a possible exit from Villa Park after six years with the club are ongoing.

Japan international Suzuki was high on Villa’s list of potential replacements for Martinez and they have now stepped up their interest, with a deal worth around £25million under discussion.

The 23-year-old was reportedly a target for Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the window but Villa now appear favourites for his signature should they push ahead with the deal.

Martinez’s future was the subject of speculation earlier in the transfer window but appeared to have been resolved, due to the distance between their and Juventus’ valuation.

But with the new Premier League season just a week away, things may be changing again.

Martinez has made 256 appearances since joining Villa from Arsenal for £20m in 2020.

During that time he has won the World Cup with Argentina and twice won the Lev Yashin Trophy after being named best goalkeeper in the world.

Should he depart, his final appearance for Villa will have been last season’s Europa League final, when the club ended a 30-year trophy drought.

Suzuki, who was born in New Jersey but grew up in Japan, played all four matches for his country at the World Cup.
