Street food takeaway opens in Shropshire town centre

Urey's has launched in a vacant unit in Oakengates after leaving its previous home in Telford Shopping Centre

A takeaway which sells food from around the world has returned to the high street.

Norma Urey has opened Urey's Street Food in Oakengates town centre after previously running a trailer at Telford Shopping Centre which closed in 2024 to make room for another food outlet.

Urey's has opened at 41 Market Street, filling an empty unit in the theatre quarter as the regeneration of Oakengates continues, after securing a Pride in Our High Street grant which supports independent businesses wishing to move to a town centre.

The business serves freshly prepared food including Indian, Thai, Caribbean, Chinese, Mexican and Italian among others.

Norma said: "It's been a long time coming but I truly believe that everything happens at the right time for good reason. I was heartbroken to have to leave my pitch at the Telford Centre but the community lifted me and carried me onto this new journey.

"I have full faith that they will continue to do so and help me to fulfil my promise in bringing new footfall to the lovely town of Oakengates.

"I applied for a Pride in Our High Street grant which included a new, exciting business plan which I put together with support from a wonderful customer and friend.

"I've received tremendous support from everyone at the council and the support has been far more than just the award of a high street grant. The Oakengates business community has given me a warm welcome and I'm delighted to be here.

"This business is my passion and I'm now looking forward to feeding customers old and new with the same love and devotion as always."

The Oakengates Theatre Quarter programme is a major regeneration project which is transforming a dated 1960s shopping precinct into a modern pedestrianised retail, residential and cultural hub.

Cllr Ollie Vickers, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for jobs, transport and digital connectivity, added: "Urey's is a fantastic addition to the high street in Oakengates.

"It was a popular business previously and we're sure that this relocation in the heart of Oakengates will help Norma to grow her business and customer base even further.

"It's another unit filled in the area around Theatre Quarter and shows our continued support for businesses as the regeneration of Oakengates continues."
