South Shropshire windmill holiday let plans withdrawn
Shaun Colley’s proposal was for the remains of Syners Mill Windmill, off Mill Lane in Broseley.
A plan to restore a former windmill to be used as a holiday let property has been withdrawn.
Shaun Colley’s proposal was for the remains of Syners Mill Windmill, off Mill Lane in Broseley.
There were originally two windmills on the site. It is suggested that the ‘Great Mill’ was constructed in 1778 and the ‘Lesser Mill’ five years later.
The truncated remains which survive is of the ‘Lesser Mill’, with the remaining masonry standing at just under 4.5 metres.
Mr Colley wanted to raise the height to create a second storey which would better reflect the original proportions of the structure.
Tony Rowland, a conservation architect, said the approach required for a successful conversion would be to provide a subservient extension which can house the services such as plumbing required for the bathroom and kitchen.
This, he added, enables the restoration of the fabric of the windmill without the need to modify the structure to accommodate those rooms.
“The shell of the windmill can then used to provide the sitting room and the bedrooms,” said Mr Rowland.
“To enable the extension to be subservient, I have chosen to detach it from the fabric of the windmill and connect it by a simple glazed link which would have a lead flat roof.
“To function successfully as a holiday let, an open plan layout on the ground floor would be ideal and this is achieved in the proposed layout by utilising the existing ground floor entrance opening to link with the sitting room.”
“A twin bedroom has been located on the first floor of the ruins of the windmill and a master double has been positioned upon the reinstated second floor of the windmill.
“To successfully function as a family holiday let, this level of accommodation is a minimum. Therefore, the reinstatement of the second floor of the tower is essential. It also works well in restoring the outline of the windmill from outside.”
However, Shropshire Council has this week confirmed the application is being withdrawn.
