Fire-hit pub's musical past

A fire which has damaged the Castle Inn at Old Coleham in Shrewsbury has brought back memories of the closed pub's musical past.

Bill Kerswell, of Picklescott, near Church Stretton, said: "There were some singers called the Castle B Singers who were based at the pub. I don't know what the B stood for. I'm going back about 50 years ago.

"They used to camp up here and go to the Bottle & Glass pub at Picklescott. I think the one lady was a police superintendent's daughter. They were like folk singers, doing country and western music."

The Castle Inn was damaged in a fire on the evening of February 4, with the cause being treated as unexplained.

The pub closed in 2008 and there have since been proposals to demolish the building to make way for new homes.

Historically it was known as the Windsor Castle, and the Bull & Pump, and originally fronted what was the main road until it was "bypassed" by a new road on a straighter alignment in the 19th century.
