Newtown community invited to join Remembrance Events 2026
Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is inviting residents, service-veterans, community groups and visitors to come together this November to honour and remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.
The town's annual Remembrance commemorations will take place on Remembrance Sunday, November 8 2026, and Armistice Day, Wednesday November 11 2026, providing opportunities for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women.
This year, Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council will once again host its Civic Remembrance ceremony at the Newtown cenotaph, following a parade through the town, including service veterans, service organisations, cadets and community representatives.
For those unable to attend in person, the Remembrance Sunday parade will be streamed live via the Town Council's Facebook page.
The town council is delighted this year to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant of Powys Mrs Tia Jones, representing HM King Charles III.
Following a service at All Saints Church from 9.30am to 10.15am, the civic The Remembrance Sunday parade will muster outside the Monty Club on Broad Street at 10.35am before proceeding to the cenotaph for the Civic Remembrance ceremony.
The ceremony will include the Last Post, two minutes of silence, the Exhortation and Kohima in both Welsh and English, the calling of names of the fallen, wreath laying, prayers, and the Act of Commitment.
Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, Councillor Margaret Lewington, said: “Remembrance is one of the most important occasions in our civic calendar. It provides us all with an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifice made by so many in defence of our freedoms.
“We are proud that our community continues to support these commemorations with such respect and dignity, and I encourage residents of all ages to join us as we honour those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
A separate Armistice Day ceremony will be held at the Newtown cenotaph on Wednesday, November 11, where local schoolchildren will play a special role in the commemorations by calling the names of the fallen and laying wreaths on behalf of the community.
Town Clerk Ed Humphries said: “These commemorations are a powerful reminder of the cost of conflict and the importance of remembering those who gave so much for future generations. We are
grateful to everyone who contributes to these events each year and helps ensure that the spirit of remembrance remains strong within our community.”
The Council has extended its sincere thanks to all those involved in organising and supporting the events, including the Royal British Legion, Rev Nia, Parade Marshal Sgt Major (Retired) Phil Davies, Newtown Silver Band, the Army and Air Cadets, Poppy Appeal Organiser Mary Tudor, Powys County Council, local police officers, volunteer stewards, council staff, The Monty Club, and CA Audio Visual.
Road closures will be in place during the Remembrance Sunday parade and service to ensure the safety of participants and the dignity of the occasion.
Residents are warmly encouraged to attend the events and show their support as Newtown joins communities across the United Kingdom in remembering those who served, sacrificed and continue to serve today.
