Welcome to this week's selection of nostalgia photos from the pages of the Shropshire Star.

Never has getting the sack been so sweet. This workman is up a ladder in the gigantic sugar store at the Allscott sugar beet factory near Wellington on November 24, 1953. The factory, which started production in 1927, was closed in February 2007 and was demolished the following year.

"Double top, treble 19, and out on double two," says Sergeant Dan Powell, captain of the North Shropshire Squadron, Shropshire Yeomanry darts team, at the Shropshire Territorial and Auxiliary Association darts and domino competitions in the Shrewsbury Drill Hall in April 1963 to his opposite number, Sergeant Ted Grey, captain of 'B' Company King's Shropshire Light Infantry, from Oswestry, who looks suitably dismayed. Although the original caption did not say which was which, the KSLI soldier is on the right.

Yes, Salopians were still getting their water like this in living memory (depending on how long you've lived, of course). This unidentified pair are in Walcot, near Wellington, drawing water from a communal pump in June 1960. Council house tenants in the village were getting their water in this way and their complaints about it formed part of a protest they were making to the then Wrekin MP Bill Yates in a petition against rent increases.

"Save Bishop's Castle" says the banner, and we heartily agree with the sentiment, as Shropshire would miss the little town. Happily the town itself was not in danger – but its council was. A big county review inquiry was starting at Shrewsbury into local government changes which would spell the end of some councils, and consequently Bishop's Castle was embroiled in a battle to save its independence. This delegation arrived on a battle bus at the Shirehall. Holding the banner is Bishop's Castle deputy mayor, Councillor W H Jarvis, with his 16-year-old daughter Gwyneth. We're pretty sure the date is June 30, 1964.

This double decker was in action in Oswestry in about 1954 or 1955. The lady on the pavement looking our way is Mrs Gladys Holmes, who lived at Treflach, and died in 1957 or 1958. The bus is an AEC Regent being operated by Crosville. The location seems to be outside Oswestry railway station. Picture: Bob Hanley.

Comedian Ken Dodd received a tumultuous reception when he went to Spa Street in Shrewsbury while appearing at the Granada in the town in May 1964. He left his Jag behind and was driven in a Mini to the area known as the "Back o' the Sheds" by the Shrewsbury Chronicle photographer, allegedly on a hunt for jam butties. The picture actually used by the paper showed Ken sharing a giant jam buttie with Shrewsbury’s Domino Queen, Miss Margaret McCarthy of number 5. We're pretty sure she is the young blonde woman immediately to the right of Doddy as you look at the picture (and Margaret, if you're out there, we'd love to hear from you). Ken knew Shrewsbury quite well, having attended Priory School as an evacuee from Liverpool.
