And planning is already well under way for next year's show, with organisers revealing the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I would be marked at the event.

Kim Leach, secretary of the event, said Shropshire Horticultural Society would be commemorating the centenary at the 2014 show.

She said that organisers would be looking to mark the anniversary in an "appropriate way", with more details to be released closer to the time.

"Next year we will be looking to deliver a special show," she said.

"It is going to be 100 years since the First World War so we will be commemorating that."

Her comments came after tens of thousands of visitors visited this year's show over Friday and Saturday.

Great British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood performed cookery demonstrations to packed crowds over the two days, with standing room only at the events, as hundreds of people packed into the Marches Foodhall to watch him in action.

Mrs Leach said initial indications suggested this year's Flower Show had attracted between 40,000 to 50,000 visitors, in line with the attendances of recent years.

"At cease of play yesterday, we had probably roughly the same number as last year for Friday, and Saturday has been busier," she said.

She said the show had been blessed with "perfect weather".

"It has been the right temperature and just about the right amount of sunshine and breeze, so neither flowers or people have wilted," she said.

Mrs Leach added that Paul Hollywood's visit had been a particular success.

"He has been an absolute delight. He has been charming and great with all the visitors," she said.

Mrs Leach added the event would not have been possible without the help of the 140 volunteer stewards, as well as the ten teenage "show-makers" who have been welcoming crowds for the first time this year.

"We rely on our volunteers who help support us in this massive undertaking," she said.

"The teenage showmakers have really brought a smile to the show as people come in and are greeted by young people from Shropshire."

Chris Reynolds, event manager from St John Ambulance, said the organisation's team of 30 people had enjoyed a quiet weekend, helped by the mild weather.

He said the organisation had only needed to deal with minor incidents.

"It has been about average for the show. The weather has helped with the temperature not being as warm as it was last year," he said.

"We have just been dealing with cuts and stings.

"It has been quiet."

One person enjoying success at the show was farmer's wife Sylvia Williams.

She picked up four prizes for her floral displays at the event, with one arrangement being inspired by the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Mrs Williams, who is from West Felton near Oswestry and the chairman of Ellesmere Flower Club, said she had been exhibiting at the show for around 20 years but had never managed to pick up so many trophies in one year.

She said she was thrilled with her success, with her arrangements making use of flowers such as roses and gladioli.
