For more than two decades the small village of Wattlesborough near Shrewsbury has held an annual festival centred on the humble potato.

The event returns this Saturday (February 7) when around 500 spud lovers are set to descend for the annual celebration at Wattlesborough Village Hall from 9.30am.

Rachel Strivens, chairwoman of Shropshire Organic Gardeners, which puts on the event each year, explains the reason behind Potato Day.

“It was started by a research association more than 20 years ago as they wanted to bring back heritage potatoes," she said.

“Over the years, we had lost so many different varieties. Most potato growers are breeding new potatoes and your Maris Pipers which, don’t get me wrong, are very good and I use them myself but keeping the heritage potatoes growing is important to keep them with us for the future.
