Teachers Pete and Evie, who founded Wonderkid Sports, said the idea followed their experiences trying to find suitable sports activities for their son, who has SEND.

The couple say they found some local sessions lacked the understanding, inclusivity and suitable facilities needed to support his needs.

Pete, a qualified PE teacher and UEFA B-qualified football coach, has more than 10 years' experience in sports coaching. He has also been offering free one-to-one coaching sessions during the summer to children whose families apply.

The provider is due to start weekly football and multi-sports sessions for children aged 18 months to seven years at Wrekin College in Wellington on Saturday, September 5. Sessions are also planned at Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre in Staffordshire from Sunday, October 4.

The three new initiatives are the Wonderkid Bursary Programme, Scholarship Programme and New Beginnings Programme.

The bursary scheme is aimed at children facing financial, personal or social barriers, including children with SEND, those receiving Pupil Premium, Armed Forces children, looked-after and care-experienced children, young carers and children learning English as an additional language.

Children affected by bereavement or families experiencing financial hardship or other exceptional circumstances can also apply.

Successful applicants will receive their first month free, followed by a reduced monthly fee.

The Scholarship Programme is aimed at children showing sporting potential, effort and a positive attitude, while the New Beginnings Programme will provide one child who has moved to the UK within the past three years with 12 months of free membership and a football.

All three programmes are available through mainstream classes and dedicated SEND sessions.

Pete said: “As teachers, we work every day to support children and remove barriers to opportunity. As a football coach, I have also seen incredibly talented children fall behind because their families cannot afford the same coaching and resources as children from wealthier backgrounds.

“We created Wonderkid after seeing how difficult it was for our own son to access sports sessions that properly understood and accommodated his needs. We want every child to feel welcomed, supported and able to enjoy sport.”

Evie said: “Taking our son to any club has always caused us a lot of anxiety because of our past experiences. That’s why Pete really wanted to establish Wonderkid.

“Parents shouldn’t have to feel that way when taking their child to enjoy sport. Everyone, regardless of income, background or SEN need should feel welcome.”

Families can apply for the schemes through Wonderkid Sports' application form. Visit the website for more information.
