Just Credit Union has opened applications for its Christmas loans, with borrowing available from £300. People who live or work in the region can apply to join the co-operative and open a savings account at any time.

Steve Barras, development manager at Just Credit Union, said planning ahead could help people enjoy Christmas without taking on unmanageable debt.

“Whilst we are not encouraging people to celebrate Christmas early, we are encouraging them to plan early,” he said.

He advised people to set a budget, work out what they could afford and, where possible, put money aside each week.

Mr Barras also warned that spending on credit cards, overdrafts and buy now, pay later schemes could quickly add up.

He said anyone considering borrowing should plan how much they need and use a reputable, registered organisation that checks whether repayments are affordable.

Just Credit Union says its loans are assessed for affordability and borrowers also have a savings account to help them build up money for unexpected costs or future Christmas spending.

The organisation will also share Christmas hints and tips to help people manage their money over the festive period.
