The Carers' Peer Support Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, providing an informal and confidential setting where carers can discuss concerns, share ideas and make new friends.

Many members care for their husbands or wives at home, and the group aims to help people navigate some of the practical and emotional challenges that come with the role.

Guest speakers are also invited to provide advice on issues including practical support and respite, financial and legal matters, employment rights and other services available to carers.

Jacqui, whose husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia, has attended the group and said it provided valuable support.

"As carers, trying to navigate our ways through changing and uncertain futures, this group provides practical support through signposting and information sharing," she said.

"The opportunity to share, in confidence, the emotional and physical impact we experience in our roles as carers is invaluable."

Members have also started meeting for lunch around once a month, either with or without the person they care for, providing an opportunity to take a break and socialise outside the regular meetings.

Julie Alanthwaite, a carers' support worker with Shropshire Council and the group's coordinator, said the sessions provided an opportunity to discuss the everyday problems carers face in a relaxed atmosphere.

"We aim to have speakers who are experts on the various difficulties carers are likely to face," she said.

"The group is free to attend and we always respect confidentiality."

The group meets from 2pm to 3.30pm in the Starmer Room at the Parish Rooms in Market Drayton.
