Members of the Shropshire Fungus Group visited Soulton Wood on October 31 to study the role fungi play in supporting the woodland's broadleaf trees and maintaining soil health.

The visit built on findings from a previous survey in October 2025, with the group comparing species recorded at different stages of autumn to monitor seasonal changes.

Fungi play an important role in woodland ecosystems by breaking down organic matter, recycling nutrients and supporting tree growth.

Previous surveys at Soulton Hall have recorded several notable species, including the Stinking Dapperling (Cystolepiota bucknallii), known for its distinctive coal-gas smell, the Dusky Bolete (Porphyrellus porphyrosporus) and Trochila ilicina, a microscopic fungus that grows on fallen holly leaves.

The site also has historical connections with Sir Rowland Hill and Thomas Lodge Jr's 1590 work Rosalynde, which inspired the Forest of Arden in Shakespeare's As You Like It.

The Shropshire Fungus Group works under the motto Protection Through Education, collecting information across the county's hills, broadleaf woods and meres to contribute to local and national biodiversity records.

Members examine specimens using techniques including studying stem structures, spore prints and microscopic details to help identify species.

The group will hold its annual general meeting and next public walk at Loamhole Dingle on Saturday, November 7. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the county's fungi records is welcome to attend.
