Record-breaking locomotive steaming in to Shrewsbury station

Britain's largest operational steam locomotive and world record holder – London Midland and Scottish Railway no. 6201 Princess Elizabeth – will steam into Shrewsbury station at the head of the Cathedrals Express tomorrow.

The giant locomotive, which is more powerful than its LNER rival Flying Scotsman, was designed at Derby's locomotive works in 1933 and built at Crewe, where it was named after Her Majesty the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth of York.

In 1936 the train smashed the world long distance speed record by maintaining an average speed over 70 mph for in excess of 400 miles non-stop.

No time is being given because of concerns that it will attract crowds and cause a safety issue.
