6 beautiful riverside spots in the West Midlands that make the perfect day out this summer

While the coast may be hundreds of miles away, the West Midlands is blessed with beautiful riverbanks, historic waterfront towns.

There are many historic waterfront towns and peaceful stretches of countryside in the West Midlands where you can spend an afternoon watching boats drift by, enjoying a picnic or exploring scenic walking trails.

They all make for a perfect day out this summer - and are well worth the visit.

From the mighty River Severn to the tranquil Avon, these six riverside spots are among the most beautiful places to visit this summer.

Bewdley, Worcestershire

One of the prettiest riverside towns in the region, Bewdley sits gracefully on the banks of the River Severn. Elegant Georgian buildings line the waterfront, while broad promenades provide uninterrupted views of the water and passing boats.

Summertime is an ideal time to wander the town's independent shops and cafés before taking a riverside stroll beneath mature trees. The nearby Wyre Forest adds another dimension to a day out, making Bewdley a perfect combination of town, countryside and river scenery.

Bridgnorth, Shropshire

Spread across both sides of the River Severn, Bridgnorth offers some of the most dramatic riverside views in the West Midlands. The historic High Town rises above the river on sandstone cliffs, creating spectacular panoramas over the valley below.

On sunny summer afternoons, visitors can follow riverside paths, relax in waterside pubs or watch heritage trains from the nearby Severn Valley Railway steam through the countryside.

Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire

The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution is also one of the region's most scenic riverside destinations. The famous Iron Bridge stretches elegantly across the River Severn, surrounded by wooded hillsides and historic buildings.

Summertime brings vibrant greenery to the gorge, creating beautiful reflections on the water and ideal conditions for leisurely walks.

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

Although famous for its Shakespeare connections, Stratford's riverside setting is often the highlight of a summer visit. The River Avon winds gently through landscaped parks where rowing boats, swans and picnic-goers create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

In summer, colourful flower displays and outdoor performances add to the charm. Whether you're enjoying an ice cream beside the water or taking a boat trip along the Avon, Stratford feels tailor-made for sunny days.

Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire

Where canals meet the River Severn, Stourport offers a unique waterside landscape unlike anywhere else in the region. Historic canal basins, narrowboats and riverside promenades create a nostalgic atmosphere that comes alive during summer.

Summertime is the perfect time to sit beside the water watching boats navigate the locks, explore the riverside parks or enjoy traditional seaside-style attractions that have entertained visitors for generations.

Arley, Worcestershire

Small, peaceful and often overlooked, Arley is one of the West Midlands' true hidden riverside gems. Nestled beside the River Severn, this picturesque village offers tranquil walks, beautiful countryside views and a slower pace of life.

The village's historic church overlooks the water, while nearby footpaths lead through meadows and woodland. On a warm summer’s day, it's the kind of place where you can spend hours doing very little at all—simply enjoying the scenery and listening to the river flow by.
