Harry Kane says Ballon d’Or is ‘not in my hands’ but hopes London is lucky omen

England captain Harry Kane hopes the Ballon d’Or ceremony being held in London is a lucky omen but says winning it is “not in my hands”.
Bayern Munich striker Kane is the favourite to win the prestigious award next month after scoring 73 goals for club and country last term.
While the ceremony usually takes place in Paris, it is in England this year to mark the award’s 70th anniversary and commemorate first winner Sir Stanley Matthews.
“Perhaps it is a good omen,” Kane told Spanish newspaper Marca. “Of course, having it take place in my hometown would make it even more special. So yes, it feels strange that the ceremony is being held there this year. We will have to wait and see what happens.”
Kane admits his record “speaks for itself” but knows his chances of becoming England’s first winner since Michael Owen in 2001 is out of his control.
“I have never liked talking too much about myself,” he added. “The only thing I would say is that last season was incredible, both personally and as a team.
“By far, it was the best season of my life. It is true that scoring 73 goals – the second-highest total in history – speaks for itself. I am extremely proud of it.
“But the Ballon d’Or is not in my hands. It depends on the people who vote.”
