Wolves boss explains reason behind defender's loan exit
The head coach was speaking at a press conference on Friday.
Cesar Peixoto believes the “difficult” decision to let Santiago Bueno leave was the right move for Wolves.
The Uruguay international defender is joining Mexican side Club America on loan with a £6million option to buy. There is also a 50 per cent sell-on clause in the deal.
Bueno had been left out of Wolves’ Championship squad after failing to secure a move while the English transfer window remained open.
Speaking on Friday, head coach Peixoto explained how the 27-year-old had effectively been left surplus to requirements after both he and Ladislav Krejci, another player heavily linked with a summer exit, had remained on the books.
Both are high-earners and Peixoto, who also confirmed right-back Pedro Lima will leave on loan, said: "We have five centre-backs and we only need four because I only play with two in a back four.
"We have to decide until the end if Krejci or Santi will go. Krejci stays, so Santi has to go, it's like that.
"Toti and Krejci are left-footed, Mosquera is injured and Nasser plays well, and both are right-footed.”
Peixoto continued: "Santi doesn't go because he's a bad player, he's a very good player and we know that.
"We want to sell a player and the most valuable are Krejci or Santi.
"The market is sometimes crazy and doesn't come like we want. It's not a good way that things finished, but sometimes you have to make these difficult decisions.
"It's tough and difficult because he's a respectful guy, a very good professional, a very good player but we only need four centre-backs.”
Lima, who has struggled for playing time since arriving from Recife three years ago, is expected to return to Brazil for the season, joining Sao Paulo.
Peixoto said: “He needs to play. He's a young guy, he needs space to play.
"We have Kieran and Jackson, so it's difficult for him.
"At his age he needs minutes to grow up, just training is not good enough for him, so it's better for him and the club, and his development, for him to go.”
