'Inappropriate and discriminatory behaviours' found at Shropshire secondary school

All but two areas of the school were found to meet the ‘expected standard’.

Ofsted inspectors have raised concerns over how discriminatory behaviour is addressed at a Shropshire secondary school.

The Corbet School in Baschurch has been told to strengthen its approach to discrimination in a recently published Ofsted report.

Inspectors visited the Shropshire secondary school on in June this year, and found that safeguarding standards were met, while achievement, behaviour, attendance, teaching and inclusion were all judged to be at the “expected standard”.

But the report, published this month, raised concerns that “inappropriate and discriminatory behaviours have not been adequately addressed” and that all pupils were “not confident in recognising and challenging those behaviours”.

Some students also told inspectors that they wanted more education and strategies that would address discrimination and derogatory language in and around school.

Despite this, the report said students experience a “welcoming environment” at the school, and pupils enjoy coming to school. The report also praised pupils’ generally positive behaviour, relationships with staff and access to pastoral support.

GCSE results were broadly in line with national averages, with 44.7 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths in 2024/25, compared with 45.4 per cent nationally.
