Ollie Watkins seels inspiration from Aston Villa legend Peter Withe ahead of Europa League final

Striker aiming to follow in the footsteps of European Cup winner.

Ollie Watkins will take inspiration from Peter Withe’s European Cup final winning goal as he looks to fire Villa to more glory in the Europa League.

The striker plans to watch Withe’s 1982 strike against Bayern Munich - arguably the most famous goal in the club’s history - as part of his preparations for facing Freiburg in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

Villa take on the German side in their second major European final, with Watkins eager to follow in Withe’s footsteps.

The England international said: "I haven't actually (seen Withe's winner), but I'm going to. I'm going to look back at it in these next few days before the final as inspiration.

"I think Peter Withe is a legend. He came in (to Bodymoor Heath). I've met him quite a few times. He came into the training ground last week to watch.

"It's amazing that he can do that and that we can have a legend around the place."

Villa’s squad will fly out to Turkey on Monday in high spirits having already stamped their ticket to next season’s Champions League, courtesy of Friday’s 4-2 win over Liverpool.

Watkins continued his own superb form with a brace, taking his tally for the season to 19.

Villa had taken just one point from three matches before facing the Reds and he said: "It's been hard to focus on our Premier League form.

“But now we've done what we set out to do, we've achieved Champions League football and now we're going to do all we can to win on Wednesday.

"We were meant to do it in that fashion (on Friday night) and for it to be in the last home game as well makes it even more special I think."
