Newtown hit for six as season set to end in misery

Newtown’s season is grinding to a halt in miserable fashion - as they followed up a 6-0 midweek thrashing with defeat to leaders Llandudno.

Having been aiming for a return to the Cymru Premier at the first time of asking - Nathan Leonard’s side have faltered since the new year.

Having occupied fourth spot, they have been drifting further away from the three promotion spots, and are now down to fifth having lost four games on the bounce.

In midweek against Holywell Town they were five down by half time with goals from Jamie Breese, Danny Sullivan, Jake Cooke, Joe Sullivan and Craig Lindfield.

Four half time changes failed to raise a response from the Robins - as Cooke bagged his second and the Wellmen’s fifth later in the game.

And it all boiled over at the death as manager Leonard received two yellow cards on stoppage time.

They were back on home soil against Llandudno on Saturday - and they managed to put together some kind of response as they were only narrowly beaten.

Harvey Bennett gave the Seasiders the lead just 12 minutes into the game.

And it stayed that way until just after the hour mark when Ben Maher poked them further in front.

Newtown had chances and they did pull one back 15 minutes from time as Devon Torry set up Jamie Hyne.

They did have other openings but were unable to make the breakthrough and get a second goal.

And the result has now seen Rhyl jump above them in the table - with just one game left to play in the domestic season.

They face already relegated Ruthin Town, before a CWFA Cup final against Caersws.
